2010 Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Winner Announced

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010
Thanks for stopping back by, did you subscribe to our RSS feed?

There’s a company called cheap-chic-weddings.com that every year sponsors a very unique wedding gown design contest. The designs can make any kind of wedding dress they want to, provided that it’s made out of toilet paper. The winner earns $1000 for his or her effort, and the only qualification is that it actually has to be worn by somebody and be durable enough to survive an entire wedding.

This year was the sixth year in a row that they’ve held this event. The winner ended up being a woman named Galit Zeierman, whose design ended up being more of a mini wedding dress with one shoulder strap, and that strap had a white paper bird on it, a plunging sweetheart neckline, what looked like an embroidered corset bodice, a short skirt that reminds people of what a ballerina might wear, and a paper bird hair accessory to match what’s on the shoulder. As you can see, it’s very stylish and also amazingly durable. There was no word on whether someone was actually going to wear it for wedding or not.

The top three wedding dresses in this year’s competition were all amazing. Both the second and third place winner went a bit more traditional with their wedding gowns, with strapless wedding gowns that cinched at the waist and flow down to the floor. As a matter fact, most of the wedding dresses that were submitted for the contest were long, which helps the winning wedding dress stand out from the crowd.

The company is looking to make this a bigger event for 2011, so they’ve already started to look for sponsors to help make prizes bigger and possibly award more entries. They haven’t announced a date yet, but if you’re interested you can contact the company directly to learn more.

Radzuan Radziwill

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Radzuan Radziwill is a Malaysian designer known for creating a mix between traditional Malaysian and Asian couture mixed with modern styles and designs. He ends up bringing a unique flair to all of his fashions, including his wedding designs.

Radziwill graduated in Fashion and Design from University Technology MARA in 1989, then got a Masters degree from Bunka University in Tokyo. He is an award winning designer who gained fame by designing the wedding ensemble for the Deputy Prime Minister’s sons wedding. There were many VIP guests in attendance, and that pretty much helped propel him to the top of the design world.

Islam is the main religion in Malaysia, so many of Radziwill’s designs have a flare of religious touches, especially when it comes to wedding gowns. Ensembles can be colorful and flowing while also being modest. Some of his designs might seem lavish by American standards, but that’s something that helps to set him apart from the crowd. You will see a lot of very colorful long wedding jackets with a lot of embroidery and a lot of ruffles. You will also see head coverings that match either the dress or the wedding jacket, which is a traditional look in that area of the world.

But it’s his use of color that helps Radziwill’s design stand out for American consumers. He’s not afraid to mix colors and get away from the traditional white that many American brides sometimes cling to. He doesn’t design on that much with Saddam, preferring to use silks and cottons that flow with the body and help to accentuate the body. He will also mix up a wedding gown with touches of lace and see-through materials which he might decide to embroider in some fashion or not. Sometimes the colors he mixes together are different variations on the same color. And of course he will use crystals and other things to help bring a shimmer and shine to a wedding ensemble.

It’s worth taking the time to look at some of Radziwill’s wedding designs to see if there’s something you might like. Based on currency conversion factors, you might find some of his most luxurious wedding gowns at a fairly nice price. Of course the top of the line designs might cost a little bit more, but for the work and passion that he’s put into his wedding designs, you might find that any of his wedding designs at any cost is worth it.

Wedding Dress Designer Ade Bakare

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Ade BakareThere is always something unique that comes from wedding dress designers who learn the art of integrating traditional wedding styles along with the traditions of their home countries. They learn the skills which allow them to create styles that might be exclusive to their region of the world as well as creating styles that the rest of the world will embrace as well.

Ade Bakare is one such wedding dress designer. Although he doesn’t only concentrate on wedding designs, they are a big part of his collection, and he is known as a wedding dress designer that very few can match.

Ade Bakare comes from Nigeria, not known as a hot spot for training wedding dress designers. He became interested in fashion around the age of eight, and he was lucky enough to have a mother who was accommodating and supportive of his hobby. After graduating from college with a degree in history, Bakare was able to relocate to Manchester England to study fashion and design at the University of Salford.

He won numerous design awards, but never even thought about getting into wedding gown design until a friend of his asked him to design her dress for her wedding. Her request was for a dress that would not only be glamorous on her wedding day, but a dress that she could wear to other functions as well. He ended up designing a sort of ball gown dress for her, which included a detachable part so that it would work well for other functions. Creating this multi-function dress got Bakare interested in wedding gown designs and he had his first showing in 1993.

Bakare opened his first boutique in 1997 catering to only exclusive clientele. It wasn’t until 2006 that he opened his second boutique, this time in Lagos Nigeria. Although it took them a while, he realized that there were a lot of people in his home country who wanted the exclusive wedding gown designs that only he could create.

In Nigeria, he not only caters to the wealthy but to the general public as well. In August 2009, he was the leading designer for both the bride and groom of billionaire families. The wedding ensembles he creates use traditional African fabric and colors, along with lots of embroidery.

Bakare is one of the most sought out designers in the world for both regular and wedding fashions. His designs price from very expensive to affordable. Every bride should make sure they check out his designs to see if there is something for them. Bakare’s wedding dresses start from around $1,500.

As actresses like Amy Adams and Christina Hendricks know, Carolina Herrera wedding gowns are wonderfully glorious wedding gowns. Even though that’s not necessarily what she’s known for, Herrera has become a big-time player in the wedding fashion market.

Herrera was born in Venezuela back in 1939. She attended her first fashion show at the age of 13 and knew she wanted to be a designer. Because her family was rich, she spent most of their early adult life around celebrities of all types, and doing designs for many of her friends. Because she kept receiving positive reviews for her fashions, she created a fashion collection and debuted in 1980. That was a success and in 1981 she moved to New York City to form her own company. At this point Herrera has five specialty boutiques in her fashion stylings are sold at some of the top stores around the world.

Herrera is also known for her charity work. She participates in many charities trying to and malnutrition around the world, and she is a recipient of the Award of Excellence given to her by the international Center in New York City.

When it comes to her wedding styles, Herrera would not necessarily be considered as someone who designs dresses that look like the normal wedding dress. She likes to mix up the colors of white, off-white, and silver. And with some of her gowns, she uses a lot of lace and lace netting, and she will create a mixture of both strapless gowns and gowns with straps. Her 2010 Bridal Collection also contained a mix of wedding gowns that offered touches of black. One wedding gown was an off white ivory color with black spaghetti straps, while another wedding gown added a black lace Demi jacket over in a line wedding gown with a pink wrapping around the waist. She also had one wedding dress that had a black vine design covering the entire dress; that’s something you don’t see everyday.

Many people would consider some of Herrera’s wedding dresses as being quite affordable, as some styles begin around $1500. Prices do go up from there however, in some bride could easily find them spending upwards of $5000 or more on a single gown. One thing they will be able to say is that they’re wedding dress was unique and something that probably no one else will ever be found wearing that looks exactly the same.

Jovani Wedding Dress Designs

Designer Jovani isn’t one of the more traditional wedding dress designers. As a matter of fact, weddings aren’t their specialty at all. They’re known more for designer dresses for celebrity events, evening gowns, and prom dresses.

However, Jovani does have an interesting line of wedding dresses. Known as “Beach” wedding gowns, the styles aren’t at all reminiscent of traditional wedding dresses. Instead, most of them follow the style of formal evening dresses with an extra touch of glamour and, shall we say, sexiness?

Indeed, looking at some of Jovani’s styles, you know that these wedding dresses aren’t for the timid, although Jovani’s also has a beach wedding dress line for fuller figure women. Let’s talk about the original line first. These are made with the intention of being worn by shapely women. Most of the dresses are either A-line or mermaid styles. Many are V-neck dresses that show off a woman’s cleavage with lots of open back.

Truth be told, there’s so much variety in the dresses that it’s hard to capture with only a few words. If you want color, Jovani adds touches of color around the waist and lining of many dresses, and will sometimes have different colors for the bodice and the silhouette. Lace, embroidery, even split fronts and sides; definitely nothing regular about these wedding dresses.

Jovani Wedding Gowns

The plus size Jovani line doesn’t have as much diversity, yet is flattering for any woman who wouldn’t look right in the sexier styles. These dresses cover up everything the other line lets show, and has fewer touches of color. Yet, they still have a lot of flow and femininity to them, all with natural waists so brides will be comfortable and still look stylish.

Jovani might not have the largest line of wedding dresses out there, but what there are will make brides stand out in wondrous ways.

Claire Pettibone Wedding Gown

It seems that being a wedding gown designer was bred into Claire Pettibone as a young girl when she attended a wedding at the age of 4 and decided she wanted to make wedding gowns.  Growing up in New York City, she ended up going to and graduating from the Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles with a degree in fashion design.

Her first big success was in the Beverly Hills area, where, with her husband, she launched her first designs to rave reviews.  Years later she established her credibility throughout the entire country with another show in New York City.  Her designs are so exclusive that, even though they’re all over the world, only 29 stores have licenses to market them new, including her own salon in Beverly Hills, Claire Pettibone Flagship.

Claire Pettibone Fashion Show

Pettibone’s wedding dress style is reminiscent of styles from the 1940′s and 1950′s.  Many of her creations could stand alone as evening gowns, but that doesn’t mean their simplistic.  They have a very comfortable looking style, soft and flowing, with lace and embroidery touches.  She makes them with all styles of sleeves and necklines, and tends to stay away from tight bodices.  These dresses move with the brides, so no stiff satin wedding gowns for her.  You might have layered dresses, dresses with flowers, even ruffles, and there’s nothing saying her wedding dresses will all be white, or at least pure white.

As a matter of face, her 2010 Cherry Blossom collection of wedding gowns had a mixture of muted whites and shimmering dresses that almost looked like silver, with beautiful touches of lace netting and embroidery.  One of the dresses even had a thin red belt, while another flaunted a big pink flower in the middle of the bodice area, which included a pink belt and a pink tassle; talk about taking chances!  Yet, it all fit, and that’s what makes Pettibone a favorite wedding dress designer.

Gail Garrison Wedding Gown

Designer Gail Garrison hails from Denver, CO, and has been sewing and designing clothes since she was six years old.  She was taught originally at home, then went to the University of Northern Colorado, where she studied fashion design.  After graduation, she moved to New York City where she started both modeling and fashion design.  She now has her own showroom on Seventh Avenue, which is also know as the Fashion District.

Her wedding gown designs can only be described as romantic.  She loves working with materials that are soft yet sturdy, such as silk satin, silk organza, and chantilly lace.  Her most preferred style are strapless, though she does offer some dresses with straps, and she uses lace to bring delicate and graceful touches to her wedding gowns.

Garrison’s 2010 collection is a perfect example of her style.  She loves to style many of her wedding gowns so you’ll have a definite point of demarcation between the bodice and the silhouette, though occasionally she’ll slip into an almost mermaid style dress that looks like the bodice is coming all the way down to the knees, almost like a short white dress, then offers more of a soft flair out from there, rather than a stark, fully mermaid flair.

It also doesn’t hurt her sales that, being a former model, she often exhibits her line with her as one of the models.  That’s not a bad way to market ones wares.  And they’re reasonably priced, compared to many other wedding dress designers, going between $1,500 and $4,000.

Narciso Rodriguez

One of the premiere designers in the world today is Narciso Rodriguez. Initially, all you need to know about him and how he’s viewed by others is that he designed the wedding dress Carolyn Bessette wore in 1996 when she married John Kennedy, Jr, created the dress Michelle Obama wore the night of her husband’s being elected president, and will be designing the wedding dress for Claire Danes for her wedding.

Rodriguez was born in New Jersey in 1961 to Cuban parents. He knew early that he wanted to be a designer, though his parents disapproved. He went to the Parsons School of Design in New York City, graduating in 1982. He worked as a freelance designer for awhile until hooking up with Anne Klein as women’s design director, reporting to Donna Karan. He went to work for Calvin Klein in 1991 as a design assistant. In 1996, he moved to Cerruti Paris as the women’s design director, but already had plans for his own designer line, which he launched in 1997.

After he launched his own designer product, he won two awards. He was named the Designer of the Year by the Hispanic Society and Best New Designer at the VH1 Fashion Awards in 1997. This was also after he’d designed the wedding dress for Carolyn Bessette, which whom he was a good friend. In 1998 he won the Perry Ellis Award for best new women’s wear designer from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He also won the Womenswear Designer of the Year award two years in a row, in 2004 and 2005, by the same council.

Unfortunately, because of some bad investments, including starting a line of perfumes, and the downturn of the economy, he had to sell 50% interest to Liz Clairborne in his designer clothes. Still, he puts out his yearly designs in many areas, including wedding dresses.

He’s one of those designers who puts out designs that are either loved or hated by the critics. There seems to be no in between for him, which seems to suit him just fine. He likes to push the boundaries between traditional and modern designs, and some of his designs are considered edgy. He’s been known to create short designer wedding dresses with long, see through mesh netting going to the ground to complete the look. He also loves dresses that shimmer, and isn’t afraid to go with reflective materials to help show off the brides that wear his designs. He’s also not afraid to go against type and add stitching of different colors than the rest of the wedding gowns.

If you’re looking for something modern that might push traditional boundaries, Narciso Rodriguez just might be the designer for you.

Ivanka Trump's Wedding Gown

Ivanka Trump's Wedding Gown by Vera Wang

Reality Celebrities Khloe Kardashian (Keeping up with the Kardashians) and Ivanka Trump (The Apprentice) have both just tied the knot. Khloe picked a Vera Wang form fitting strapless dress, cinched with a jewel encrusted violet sash, and a massive tulle train. She also chose to loose the veil for a hairstyle of beautiful soft curls.

Ivanka stated that she was channeling Grace Kelly with a custom vintage inspired Vera Wang adding lace sleeves and lace overlay to a strapless dress. Ms Wang claimed that the sleeves could be the latest trend to wedding dress silhouettes and the critics have given Ms. Trump an A+ for her dress selection.

Ivanka also choose to reveal her signature jewelry line with her wedding dress. She designed a platinum and diamond hairpiece for her veil and accompanied the look with platinum and diamond cluster earrings and an art deco inspired link bracelet.

The latest celebrities to get engaged are Penelope Cruz to Javier Bardeem (what a sexy Hollywood couple), Chelsea Clinton, Real NYC Housewife Bethany Frankel (finally!) and cutie patootie Andrew Shue from Melrose Place (Hello! he looks GREAT!) to “Today” Show Amy Robach.

So what dress silhouettes will they choose???? Here’s some of my thoughts………..

I would love to see Penelope in something that is true Hollywood Glamour.

I love the vintage inspired tank style sheath by Vera Wang with the scoop neck and tulle insert, puddle train with detachable puff sleeves included. I would accompany this dress with a beautiful diamond necklace or chandelier earrings and a bracelet.

Or the mermaid lace appliqué Reem Acra that features tiers of silk tulle at the flare of the skirt would look beautifully on Ms. Cruz. Pair with simple earrings to accompany this dress as not to take away from the exquisite style.

I would dress Chelsea Clinton in this classic silhouette from Reem Acra. A beautiful full skirt with a dropped waistline, light colored embroidery with sequins to add some sparkles and shines and of course a chapel train. I would add dangle earrings and possibly long gloves for a truly elegant look.

I want the WOW factor with a little fun for Bethany Frankel from the Real NYC Housewives and this Vera Wang is beautifully constructed with a trumpet silhouette, pleated neckline and tiered hemline. I would add a large beaded belt, statement earrings and a bracelet with this look.

Amy Robach will look simply lovely in this Monique Lhullier satin sashed gown with Chantilly lace, pearl buttons down the back and chapel train. I would just add simple pearl drop earrings because this look is all about the dress.

So which dress will you choose?

Designers Showing More Affordable Wedding Gowns For 2010

Vera Wang Wedding Dress

Vera Wang Wedding Dress

As the economy has wavered and spending on weddings has gone down, even the top designers are starting to feel the crunch a little bit.  Wedding dress designers, like everyone else, realize that they have to modify what they do to still be able to keep up with market trends, even if those trends are heading towards less expensive gowns.  In the long run, it may be one of the smartest moves they could ever make.

In her Spring 2010 Wedding Show, Vera Wang showed a high number of gowns at prices less than $2,000, and other gowns that were priced much lower than what she would have exhibited in the past.  Changing up on materials and some of the styling, Wang has shown that she can still create styles that have her distinctive touch, while finding a better use of less expensive materials.

The same can be said for Reem Acra wedding dresses, who has cut back on some of the embroidery she’s known for, has also still been able to put out wedding dresses women have been clamoring for, yet made them more affordable than even some of her previously worn wedding gowns, which often retain their value better than the gowns of most other designers.

All of this was done to try to offset a prediction by Los Angeles-based market-research firm IBISWorld back in February that there would potentially be a decrease in the sales of wedding gowns by 2.8%, and that the amount spent on wedding gowns would decrease by 8%.  With the rise in renting wedding gowns, designers couldn’t rely on only the richest of their customers to help keep them afloat, as they also have to compete against discount wedding outlet stores that are often selling used wares with their names on them.

How well it will all work won’t be known until the end of the year, but so far, the designers have stated that sales have remained steady, and across the industry, almost no one has said that they’ve had a reduction in sales, which may mean that bringing down the prices has been enough to stem the predicted losses.

No matter what, it’s the women buying wedding gowns that have won this year, and will continue to win as we move into 2010.
