Wedding Gown Designer Reem Acra

Reem Acra’s wedding gowns are usually known for two things. One is her use of embroidery and lots of silk. The other is that she loves lots of colors, and still considers herself a more traditional stylist with her designs.

Therefore, it was quite a surprise when she debuted her 15 dress 2010 collection. For one, there were fewer colors shown other than white and off-white. For another, most of her dresses were missing the type of embroidery that she’s known for, though just barely. This year’s collection was known as the fairy tale collection, which she said inspired her, with wedding dresses having names like Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White.

The most stunning dress of the evening, in our opinion, was the dress she called Cinderella, this dress was a strapless pale blue silk satin organza, midriff bodice and ball gown silhouette with gold silk screened embellishments. It was elegant and beautiful, though it also looked a little stiff, which satin sometimes does.

Another gown that was quite interesting was the Rapunzel, which was another strapless ball gown style with a tapered bodice a princess silhouette, with parallel embroidery and bunched lace between each line; very soft and feminine looking gown. Acra also added a veil to this dress, giving it a slight sense of mystery.

There were a couple other stunners at this show that are indicative of Acra’s style. One was an almost scandalous shiny silk satin organza, strapless with a sexy corset bodice that easily conformed to the model’s shape, and then flared out into a mermaid silhouette. What also added to the scandal was the embroidery that followed the flow of the breasts, then a little upturned crescent at the front of the dress right at the waist.

My favorite dress of the evening, however, was relatively simple, yet regally so. It was another strapless dress, but this time it was mainly silk and lace. The corset bodice came tight across the breasts, cinched at the waist and highlighted with a light gray satin belt, a final touch was a flowing and beautiful lace princess silhouette that transformed the model into royalty walking down the catwalk.

Acra also stated that she wanted to help people by making some designs that were more cost effective for expected tight budgets. She was quoted as saying “There’s something for all my brides, for all the different price levels. There’s something that everyone can afford.” With this collection, she did just that.
