What Makes A Wedding Dress Elegant?

If you’ve ever taken a look through Modern Bride magazine, you’ve seen lots of different wedding dress styles and designs. It’s easy to look at them and have your breath taken away by most of them, while others don’t quite tickle your fancy. Some are functional, while some are quite stunning. But beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. That begs this question; what makes a wedding dress elegant in one’s eyes?

For some people, it’s the perception of softness. One reason people loved Audrey Hepburn was because she seemed strong, yet soft at all times. There was a regal elegance in her performance, and, it seems, in her demeanor in real life. You see that in some wedding gowns. For instance, the wedding gown Ivanka Trump wore this weekend matched just that description. Many layers of lace and silk, all white, form fitting yet classy. You saw her as almost princess-like, yet a strong confident woman who was secure in all areas of her life.

For some people, it’s the appearance of form. The thing about a satin wedding dress that silk can’t deliver is the ability to flow outward, away from the body, as though the bride was royalty, and the dress will hold its shape. Usually these dresses conform to the rule of beauty by symmetry, that being that both sides are one and the same, as if looking at a reflection in the mirror.

For some people, it’s something within the dress that catches the eye. Sequins, beads, maybe some type of glitter, and crystals can make a dress stand out, whether it’s silk or satin or organza. These items can be all over the dress or placed strategically. Whether there are a lot of these on a dress or just a few here and there, a little bit of sparkle just might be the thing that makes a wedding dress elegant in someone’s mind.

Finally, for some people, it might be the hand touches, either the little special things here and there or maybe some extraordinary embroidery work. Some stylists will add a bow here and there, or maybe have an intriguing pattern that they’ve created and added within the lace. Some stylists, like Reem Acra, love adding heavy hand stitched embroidery, which makes each dress special and unique. Often, tantalizing the senses with something a little bit different is enough to make a wedding dress seem elegant.

No matter what one does, a wedding dress will be seen as elegant by someone. It’s the bride that has to decide what elegance means to her on her special day, since all eyes will be on her. But it’s always nice to have choices.
